Isis leader killed in targeted air strike

In an unusual move, Isis announced that Mohammad al-Adnani, the official spokesman of ISIS and one of its most senior members, has died.

Stephen Grootes on the line with EWN Middle East correspondent Paula Sliers, discussed the circumstances surrounding his death.

She says based on information from both Isis and the Pentagon, he was killed in a targeted air strike, that was carried out by the US coalition forces.

It is unclear at this stage which country is the most responsible. We know Turkey was operating in the areas in which he died.

Paula Sliers, EWN Middle East correspondent

He was killed in the northern divided town of al-Bab in Aleppo province in Syria.

Isis is calling for revenge attacks to be carried out.

He was the second most central figure in the group, second only to the leader of the group Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and was widely touted to be his successor should something happen to the leader.

Paula Sliers, EWN Middle East correspondent

She says he was one of the last of the original tier of Isis leadership and was also the propaganda chief and in charge of recruiting for 'external operations', planning attacks abroad.

He is believed to have been involved in the Bastille Day and Orlando nightclub attacks.
