Why are skills audits important for municipalities?

Skills audits are an important process for an entity which wants to define the competencies it has, so that it can move forward.

This is according to MacKenzie Tafira, Managing Partner at MMC Consulting, who spoke to #NightTalk's Gugs Mhlungu and Sizwe Dhlomo.

Tafira says that people are the most important qualities to an entity. He says that a skills audit enables entities to take stock of what it has, versus what it wants.

If you are going to take a company forward, the qualities you want are found in people

Some local municipalities are to conduct skills audits under newly elected leadership.

City of Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba recently warned that a skills audit will be conducted in the City and that staff who are not useful will be removed.

Tafira says although some Mayors may be new to local governance, they recognise the value of having a skilled workforce to meet the demands of tackling the challenges the respective municipalities face.

Nothing is going to stop these Mayors from spelling out the qualities they want to see in the individuals. They may not know about the qualities of the individuals, but one thing they know are the problems they want to run with
