Police commissioner Kgomotso Phalane doing a good job: ISS

The Minister of Police, Nkosinathi Nhleko, will release the annual crime stats on Friday at 1pm.

Head of governance, crime and justice at the Institute for Security Studies, Gareth Newham, said the release of these stats is important as it identifies key trends in crime and violence and is a comprehensive set of data that looks at around 1 150 police stations nationwide.

It's not the only source of crime data but it includes 30 difference categories, including murder and robbery.

Gareth Newham, ISS

When it comes to murder we've seen an increase of 50% since '94. Three years after 2012, 2013 and 2014, there was a significant increase in murder and that can be attributed to gang warfare and alcohol abuse. Initiatives got off the ground earlier this year, but we wont immediately the effects of that.

Gareth Newham, ISS

Newham commended acting police commissioner, Lt-Gen Kgomotso Phalane, praising his "back to basics plan". Newham added that there has been an increase in the overall arrest rate but challenges existed on the prosecution side.
