Hawks miss deadline from civil society groups

The Hawks have yet to respond to an ultimatum by civil organisations Freedom Under Law and the Helen Suzman Foundation.

The two groups gave the Hawks and NPA until 12pm on Monday to formally commit themselves not to arrest Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan without prior warning, or face court action.

They want an undertaking that if Gordhan is to be charged, he will be given at least 20-day notice in order to apply to a court for an interdict.

Gordhan and other former Sars officials have been implicated in an investigation surrounding a disbanded unit within the revenue service.

Depsite missing the deadline, the Helen Suzman Foundation says they will give the Hawks the courtesy of a grace period.

We will maybe allow them a little more leeway as they aren't as efficient as we'd want them to be. Maybe there will be a follow up letter to remind them that they've missed their deadline.

Francis Antoine, Director of the Helen Suzman Foundation

Foundation Director Francis Antoine says that the group will meet with its lawyers later today to in preparation to file a court interdict.

According to Antoine, there is no legal basis for the Hawks to pursue Gordhan in the manner which they have.
