Zambian opposition's hopes dashed after court dismisses petition

Zambia's president, Edgar Lungu, will be inaugurated after the Constitutional Court dismissed the opposition's bid to nullify the August election's results.

The judges ruled that the deadline to hear the case had lapsed on midnight of 2 September. However, the Constitutional Court has requested more time to assess the merits of the United Party for National Development's (UNDP) petition on the day before the deadline.

The presidential elections have been marred by vote rigging allegations by opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema.
