50% of unmarried couples move in together

There are different reasons why people in relationship decide to move in together. It could be because they want to save up on rent money and just pay for a common place, it could be to test the long term prospect of eventual marriage or it could be for company and sharing household duties..

According to Dr Schomer, many people do see co-habitation as a relationship test, to see whether we can live well together or not.

The attitude towards co-habition has changed over the years, says Dr Schomer. It used to be unusual because people believed you have to be married before moving in together and now its a normal thing to do.

A few decades ago living together was frowned upon. Nowadays 50% of unmarried couples choose to live together. Ten years ago the figure was just 34%.

Before moving in together, Dr Schomer says you have to ask very clear questions.

The danger is after two years you are so comfortable, even if you don't love the person anymore, and that pushes you to marry because you are so comfortable, then you marrying for the wrong reasons.

Dr Helgo Schomer, resident psychologist

Why are you doing this?

Are you doing it as a test or is it for convenience? Before you cohabit you need to have a discussion and talk about why you are doing it, says Dr Schomer.

If necessary couples could rope in professional help to help them iron out things before they can co-habit.

Dr Schomer says about 20% of females get pregnant within the first 6 months of cohabiting. Decisions needs to be made before being caught off guard.
