University fee increase for 2017 not yet decided - Higher Education DG

The Department of Higher Education has raised concerns over the continuing student unrest at the University of KwaZulu Natal (UKZN) as students protest against an expected fee increase in 2017.

Qonde agrees that the Council on Higher Education has proposed an 8% fee increase, but says Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande has not made a final decision to go ahead or not.

I think within the month the minister will consolidate the feedback from all the structures and advise the sector accordingly. It is going to happen before the end of this month.

Qonde says the challenge is who will absorb the extra costs of fee adjustments, because last year these were absorbed by government.
