UKZN students chip in to bail out arrested peers

Students at the University of KwaZulu-Natal say they will bail out 23 of their peers who were arrested during violent protests at the Westville campus this past week.

Some arrested students appeared today and yesterday on charges of malicious damage to property, reports EWN's Ziyanda Ngcobo.

Basically their comrades have pledged solidarity with them and will help them with bail.

Meanwhile, the outcomes of their court appearances remain unknown at this stage.

Protests were initially sparked by possible fee increments for the next academic year and moved to students expressing other demands relating to issues around housing, security, racism and sexual assault.

Students have denied initiating acts of arson and vandalism during the violent protests, while university management is adamant that students are to blame.

Ngcobo says that there seems to be finger-pointing between students, management and private security services.

Students at all UKZN campuses are leaving their residences and making their way home as classes have been suspended until Monday 19 September.
