Gauteng to cut municipalities' water supply by 15%

Minister of Water and Sanitation Nomvula Mokonyane says water levels in Gauteng have now reached a point of no return.

Mokonyane says her department is now taking the restrictions to a higher level.

She says level 2 restrictions implemented to alleviate the crisis have not been effective.

One of the major decisions we are now taking is that we are going to provide every municipality in Gauteng with 15% less of the normal supply that they will be getting through Rand Water.

Mokonyane says municipalities have failed to show the ability to decrease water usage by 15%.

We will rather save. They will then have to work out the distribution with minus 15% that we are now giving to them.
