Ramaphosa may take the reins from President Jacob Zuma - analyst

President Jacob Zuma's days may be numbered and political analyst Prof. Lesiba Teffo predicts that the second-in-command Cyril Ramaphosa will take over from him in 2017.

The ANC's 54th national conference in December 2017 will see a new party president ushered in, and the leadership race appears to be between Ramaphosa and Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.

He says the Zuma name has a bad reputation, and may not inspire support from South Africans.

I would fall on the side of Ramaphosa. I don't see South Africans having an appetite for another Zuma in the office.

Prof. Lesiba Teffo, political analyst

Teffo says given the harm brought to the nation by the Zuma name, even Ramaphosa's critics may vote in his favour.

Addressing the succession debate, ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe says the party needs to focus on principles and not personalities.

Teffo says Mantashe has always been a voice of reason within the movement, which is fraught with factions and 'politics of the stomach'.

He says that Mantashe may not have the power to effect change, and also contradicts himself in some of his attempts to appear neutral.

According to Teffo, the liberation movement is incapable of self-correcting or changing the course of South African history at this stage.

It cannot be the ANC that can save itself from itself. It has to be somebody else.
