Blended families can be any mix of yours, mine and ours - and many more permutations.

The nature of South African families has evolved and changed, as new ways of structuring family and relationships is on the rise.

It's no longer a nuclear family of mom, dad and children, but could include nephews and nieces and children from previous marriages.

Factors like divorce, remarriage, death of parents from HIV/Aids, migrant workers (parents working elsewhere) are far more prevalent.

Flicky Gildenhuys, family and relationship therapist and author of ‘Blending Families’ speaks to 702/CapeTalk's Eusebius Mckaiser about the joys and challenges of guardianship.

Having raised six children in a blended family, Geldenhuys understands both the joy and turmoil that comes from having to deal with taking care of other peoples children.

The key is to have realistic expectations of the way forward...

Gildenhuys also spoke about the challenge of bringing in the heritage and tradition from a previous family life, into the new family to try and create that sense of belonging and continuity.
