Rescue teams searching for trapped illegal miners called off operations after reaching a dead end.
EMS Spokesperson Synock Matobako explains that the mineral resources department made the call to end the search.
With the information we have, the mine rescue team did everything in their powers to try rescue the men and find dead bodies in the mine.— Synock Matobako, EMS Spokesperson
It’s understood the two men have fled the site after police arrested seven illegal miners, and warned that every person that comes to the surface will be arrested.
On Monday evening, the team recovered the body of one of the so called zama zamas, while another man who was brought to the surface remains in a critical condition.
Authorities have cordoned off the disused mine and aren’t allowing anyone near the site.
