Bank card cloning on the increase as the festive season nears

A couple visiting from Australia lost US$700 (around R7 000) at an ATM on Adderley street when their bank card was cloned.

Muneeb “Mo” Hendriks , security manager for Central City Improvement District says they are aware of these card skimming con artists and have put measures in place to curb their illegal activity.

He says these con artists come and go and they are active again as we near the festive season.

He says they have managed to make a few arrests with the help of police.

Tourists fall prey to these scams because they are new here and are not familiar with this type of crime, says Hendricks. He says awareness programmes at entry points such as airports and tourism centres could help educate people.
