NSFAS loan is like paying off furniture - Gwede Mantashe

Speaking at the Black Management Forum conference, Secretary General of the ANC, Gwede Mantashe, said that people demanding everything for free are setting a dangerous course.

EWN reporter, Gia Niccolaides, says Mantashe claims the clause in the Freedom Charter that basic education must be free and compulsory is very specific, especially that university education will be accessible and be given on merit.

"This is not free education", reiterated Mantashe.

He said the ANC wants to make sure that the poor get free education in the future, but for now it's focus is to ensure that no child is deprived of fulfilling their potential because of their financial status.

Mantashe spoke about those who are complaining about paying back NSFAS loans acknowledging it is a painful process but needs to be done.

He likened it to buying furniture saying while it is painful to pay installments, you still have the furniture to enjoy and that's how education should be viewed by these students.
