5 reasons behind phone call anxiety

Do you prefer someone to ring you up or rather drop you a text?

Studies suggest one third of cellphone users don't make calls, and judging from on-air responses, many CapeTalk and 702 listeners share this sentiment.

Presenter Eusebius McKaiser spoke frankly about his anxiety in answering calls, and invited listeners to share their experiences with phone call phobia.

Here are just five of the reasons that explain why someone may not take your call:

1. They find it difficult to politely end lengthy conversations

I'd rather text, but people find it rude when you won't talk to them on the phone. I don't want to be on the phone for 60 minutes with you.

2. They want to avoid being put on the spot

Eusebius adds that it's harder to say no on the phone, and easier to formulate an excuse via text.

You don't have a chance to turn down an invite for example. You have the space to lie via WhatsApp

Eusebius McKaiser,

3. Caller ID: They cannot filter unknown or unsaved numbers, so prefer not to answer all together

4. Some feel uncomfortable with verbal exchanges, and prefer online communication

There's no verbal communication, it's this whole e-talking. Nobody talks to each other directly anymore, we don't know how.

Kurt, caller

5. The convenience of smartphone technology, which also can be cheaper than calling

But Jill disagrees, and feels that tone and mood cannot be accurately translated without voice.
