Within an hour R1.4 million was raised by business, students, a tow truck driver, 82 year old pensioner and a one-year-old who donated from his piggy bank.
947 Breakfast Express listeners came together to donate money for baby Caylum Willemse born in January this year with tracheo oesophageal fistula (TOF) and oesophageal atresia (OA).
This means he has problems with his oesophagus (the feeding tube) and the trachea (the windpipe).
In order to save Caylum's life and give him a chance at a normal life he has to undergo surgery that has been pioneered at the Boston Childrens Hospital by Dr Rusty Jennings.
The money raised will be able to take baby Caylum up to Boston and give him a fighting chance at a normal life.
Listeners dug deep into their 32-day notice accounts, nest eggs, even money being saved by a student for a car, to help Caylum get to Boston for the treatment he needs.
