Wits students and management deadlocked, general assembly on hold

Wits University management has confirmed that the general assembly planned for this morning has been postponed.

The assembly was aimed at discussing a way forward to resolve the issues raised in student protests that began three weeks ago.

Students and management could not reach agreement and the assembly will now take place when a consensus is reached and conditions for such an assembly can be met.

EWN reporter Thando Kubeka says the meeting that took place to decide on terms of the general assembly went on till the early hours of Friday morning. The meeting reached a deadlock, and no agreement was reached.

She says the university could not agree to students demands of free education and the students refused to give assurances that classes will resume on Monday.

Students and management could not agree on the procedure of the general assembly. There were disagreements about who should speak at the assembly.

The safety of people attending the general assembly could not be guaranteed.

Adam Habib says the university's first priority is to have the 2016 academic activities continue.
