Could we have South Africans fighting on behalf of ISIS?
Many governments including the UK have been monitoring the recruitment activities of ISIS and how they get people from other nations to join the jihadi. Should South Africa also wake up to this possibility? Xolani Gwala spoke to Daily Maverick's Simon Allison who interviewed a man who is said to be the first South African jihadi in Syria. Simon stressed the point that they don't know for sure if this person is genuine but they are following all leads and are trying to discover who he is and what community he's from in South Africa.
We did a few tests to try and ascertain the realness of this person, including asking for his passport and trying to proof that he was indeed where he claimed he was. He chopped off a bit of the front page where it says "In the President's name please grant the bearer of this passport etc" because he says that is a sign that everything should be done in the President's name rather than that of god's name. He also gave a proof of entry stamp into Turkey, which is the main entry point for foreign fighters going to fight in Syria for the Islamic state. There seems to be a small percentage of South Africans that seem to be in support of the ISIS and we are doing research and following a few tips to this end.
