The Science Of ...

How that fish got on your plate (and how the dwindling supply is being managed)

Humans have always been fishing, but nowadays it’s a massive industry with high-tech trawlers scouring the planet for this dwindling resource.

We spoke to Sea Harvest Chief Executive Felix Ratheb about the history of commercial fishing in South Africa since the early 1900s when it was a free-for-all and fish was still plentiful.

Ratheb touches on the depletion of fish stocks around the late 1970s and plans to ensure sustainability, including the option to farm fish like they do in some countries.

He discusses the state of the industry in South Africa, the fishing boats they use (costing R150-million each!) and how they “hunt” for fish.

Do small fishermen have a future? Can they compete with the I&Js and Sea Harvests of this world and do the big guns take all the fish away? How does a company such as Sea Harvest address the challenges presented by climate change and environmental degradation?

Listen to the audio for answers to these questions and more.
