Your walking has gotten Joburg gymning... outdoors!

The Discovery 702 Walk the Talk officially opened a new outdoor gym in Parkview, funded by walkers who took part in last year’s event.

The George Hay Park has become the latest community to benefit from the Walk the Talk’s community legacy project.

The George Hay Park gym has been in place since the beginning of this year and is already attracting regular users from across Joburg. The park is seen by its residents and visitors as a green hub and the addition of the outdoor gym is another resource to attract people to get out and get active.

The gym is free, open 24 hours and accessible to all. It is suitable for use by people of all ages, shapes and fitness levels and offers all the benefits of a traditional gym workout, with the added reward of being out in the fresh air.

The event organisers engage with the residents’ associations in the suburbs that give up their streets for the walkers each year. They are asked to propose projects that will promote health and fitness in their areas, as well as among the many citizens who flock to this green belt of Joburg for recreation and exercise.

In line with Discovery’s philosophy of making people healthier, and 702’s focus on building bridges between people and strengthening communities, the funds from last year were directed to an outdoor gym. It is the second outdoor gym that has been funded by the event, following the success of the Greenside gym which has been open since mid-2014.

Recently were so excited to find out about a group of active ladies who've started a fitness club at the Greenside Outdoor Gym, we had to pop in and see them in action.

The ladies started getting together at the gym in July last year, their fitness instructor, Jack Maganyuka explains that the group began meeting at the park after they realized that the gym was open to the public.

Maganyuka says that he was inspired to begin training the ladies because he believes that it's important for people to live a healthy lifestyle.

The group meets at 5.30pm every afternoon, and usually trains for half an hour ending off with a run around the park.

The group is currently doing toning exercises while the gym equipment is under maintainence, one of the fitness fundi's Lizzie, explains why they aren't using it right now:

If you use these outdoor gyms, we'd love to hear from you. How has this facility helped you? Do you have a favourite piece of equipment? Is there more you would like to see here? Your comments below please...
