[WATCH] New adapted national anthem by students

Student activists at the University of the Witwatersrand and Stellenbosch University have been singing the national anthem with new phrases and melody.

The song starts with the Nkosi sikelel' Afrika paragraph that exists in South Africa's national anthem, and then switch to the newly added words.

Some people on social media have called it a 'new decolonised national anthem'.

Nkosi sikelel' iAfrika

Maluphakanyisw' uphondo lwayo,

Yizwa imithandazo yethu,

Sibe moya munye (To be united in one spirit)

Noma sekunzima emhlabeni (Even through hard times in this world)

Sihlukunyezwa kabuhlungu (When we are painfully abused)

Nkosi siph' amandla okunqoba (Lord give us strength for victory)

Silwe nosathane (To fight the devil)

Watch the video below to hear the song...

During the Wits students general assembly Wits student activist Koketso Poho led the song.
