Rand drops, Twitter conspiracies soar after Gordhan's summons

Since news broke of Finance Minister Parvin Gordhan's formal summons to appear in court for fraud, social media has been set alight with reaction.

A number of tweeps suspect that this is part of President Jacob Zuma's alleged plot to unseat Gordhan through criminal charges, but others feel that Gordhan must stand up in court if he indeed has nothing to hide.

The ruling party has since issued a statement acknowledging the NPA's remarks, and denial of political interference.

Some Twitter users believe a Cabinet reshuffle is imminent, teasing that Des van Rooyen is waiting in the wings for a second shot at the post.

Meanwhile, the rand has plummeted and others anticipate that the political uncertainty will lead to a credit ratings downgrade.

Others have also called into question the timing of the briefing, a day after outgoing Public Protector Thuli Madonsela announced that Zuma was uncooperative with her state capture investigation.
