Richard Pithouse publishes piercing anthology on SA's political violence

Columnist, activist and academic Richard Pithouse has published a collection of his best work that relevantly reflects the current political state of South Africa.

His commentary in Writing the Decline: On the Struggle for South Africa’s Democracy maps and critiques the current democratic state, liberal institutions and popular social movements.

Pithouse begins his anthology with an introduction that draws his thoughts and collection of essays together.

His first entry reviews his body of work and the current state of South Africa.

Themes in the book include political violence as form of social control, the country's history, popular movements and the role of liberal institutions.

The book is written from Durban and Grahamstown, where he says the political landscape differs strongly.

Stylistically, Pithouse writes lyrically in his critique of class divides, elitism and the erasure of oppressed voices.

He also focuses on how marginalised groups who organise themselves are 'othered' through mainstream discourses, citing several pertinent examples.
