President Buhari says talks continue after Boko Haram frees 21 Chibok girls

21 of the Chibok schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram have been freed.

The Islamist militant group kidnapped more than 200 girls from a school in Chibok in April 2014.

EWN's Nigeria correspondent Samson Omale reports that their release follows negotiations that were brokered by the International Red Cross and the Swiss government.

In a statement, President Muhammadu Buhari says that negotiations are still ongoing to guarantee the safe release of the remaining girls.

EWN understands that the young girls were dropped off in the middle of Maiduguri, the birthplace of Boko Haram in north-eastern Nigeria.

They were collected by a military helicopter and are receiving rest and shelter before they are debriefed, explains Omale.

Buhari is off to Germany to discuss ways of assisting the Nigerian government to end the onslaught of the militant group.

According to Omale, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo will be taking custody of the girls later on today.

The Nigerian military is currently carrying a large-scale operation in the Sambisa forest, Boko Haram’s stronghold.
