Malema says summons is attempt to silence him

EFF leader Julius Malema says he's not shaken by what he believes are trumped up charges to silence him and his party.

Malema was issued with a summons for an offence allegedly committed in 2014 and earlier this year while campaigning.

According to the summons, Malema contravened two acts the Riotous Assemblies Act and the Trespass Act near Mangaung in Bloemfontein in 2014 and in New Castle in KwaZulu-Natal in June this year.

EWN's Masa Kekana reports that he was served with a note informing him of the summons during the middle of the press briefing at EFF's headquarters in Braamfontein this afternoon.

During the Q&A with the media, he was handed over a note by EFF general secretary Godrich Gardee to say that police are outside the EFF headquarters waiting to summons him.

Malema says that opponents of President Jacob Zuma and the ANC are being oppressed through State institutions.

During the briefing, the EFF leader was outspoken about the fraud charges facing Pravin Gordhan, Thuli Madonsela's state capture report, and the Fees Must Fall movement.

It’s not clear yet what the alleged offence was but the EFF's Fana Mokoena says the party will send a formal statement in due course.
