Dramatic video shows close call with Great White in shark cage

Startling footage surfaced this week showing a Great White shark ploughing through a shark cage diving cage.

The shark is seen breaching the cage, grabbing some bait, while a person was still inside.

Onlookers watch from the safety of the boat, but question whether someone is still inside the cage.

Once the shark breaks free from the cage and swims away, a diver appears in the water unharmed, narrowly escaping the encounter.

Judging by the clear waters, shark tours operator Wilfred Chivell suspects the incident took place in Guadalupe Island, Mexico.

Chivell explains that the South African shark tour industry is strictly monitored and inspected regularly for equipment compliance.

He insists that the Great White had no intent to harm any human life and was simply lured by the piece of bait.

The shark probably never even saw the guy in the cage. He was never interested in the guy, he wanted to get out of the cage.

Wilfred Chivell, founder of Marine Dynamics

Chivell maintains that operators put humans in cages in order to protect the sharks.
