Power update: national grid constrained

EWN with the details: Eskom says it's hopeful it won’t have to implement load shedding today. While the national power grid remains under pressure, the country managed to escape rolling black outs over the weekend. Eskom has blamed its aging infrastructure for the lack of generating capacity. The power utility says it's still doing maintenance on some of its generating units which will strain its production capacity. Eskom’s Khulu Phasiwe has urged customers to use electricity sparingly to avoid any further power cuts today: “We are urging all our customers to also assist us by using electricity sparingly so that we can all avoid this possibility that may arise if we don’t have enough generating capacity.” Phasiwe says it’s all dependent on whether all generating units are back online, If they are all back online then there will be no load shedding.

Details to follow on proposed PetroSA retrenchments

EWN's Monique Mortlock on this story: workers at PetroSA will hopefully get more clarity on proposed retrenchments at the company this week. An employee at the parastatal has told Eyewitness News the Chemical, Energy, Paper, Printing, Wood and Allied Workers’ Union (Ceppwawu), will likely be meeting with management today to discuss the move. EWN has in its position, a memo that group CEO, Nosizwe Nokwe-Macamo had sent to Ceppwawu. The memo reveals the company’s plan to dismiss nearly half of its 1,800 employees. The company cites various reasons for the proposed dismissals, namely oil price reductions and decline in revenues. In a memo to staff, the parastatal states the move could be implemented from next month. It reveals that around 40 percent of its workers across all levels are likely to be retrenched. The company's Zama Luthuli didn’t want to comment on the matter.
