Proposal to give struggling students two years to complete matric

South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) has criticised Limpopo Education Department over a plan that would allow learners in Grade Eleven to pass into matric, even if they’ve only passed three subjects.

Learners would then be given two years to complete their matric subjects.

Education specialist Professor Jabu Maseko says the Education Department is coming with a better option to accommodate students with different needs.

I think what the government is trying to do is that those students who are progressed can be allowed to choose their subjects in Grade 12.

Professor Jabu Maseko, education specialist

When you look at today's learners, who are different from my age group, most of them cannot afford to continue with all the subjects. To keep them in school knowing very well that they cannot pass, I think the department is coming with a better option.
