7de Laan show might be canned amid dispute with SABC

Popular Afrikaans soap opera 7de Laan may not air next week due to a pay dispute between the show's production company and the SABC.

TV expert Jared Orlin explains that Danie Odendaal Productions have reached a deadlock in talks with the public broadcaster.

The talks have disintegrated in to non-finality at the moment.

Contracts for the new season, which was expected to air on Monday, have not been signed by the SABC.

The production company has issued an internal memo to its staff, which has since been publicised, warning them about the possibility of unpaid salaries.

They also warned that the contract might not be renewed, if the dispute has not been resolved.

Below is the Danie Odendaal Productions memo:

While Orlin says contract disputes are not unusual at the SABC, he says both parties are tight for time.

All of next week's episodes are ready and available. But the question is whether they will be shown.

Jared Orlin, correspondent at TV Plus magazine

Orlin explains that 7de Laan is a major cash cow for the SABC, and that it would be in their best interest to keep the soap on air.

Danie Odendaal Productions confirmed it was their memo, but refused to comment, referring us to the SABC for comment.

Meanhwile, the SABC say the production house needs to comment, as it was their leaked internal memo.

Should the production house speak to CapeTalk and implicate the SABC, only then will the SABC comment.
