Wits student leader hands raised, shot 13 times with rubber bullets

University of the Witwatersrand former SRC President Shaeera Kalla and five other students were injured during a confrontation with the police outside the Great Hall at Wits University.

According to Wits SRC General Secretary Fasiha Hassan, students were unarmed and had their hands raised when the police shot them.

According to EWN reporter at Wits, Clement Manyathela, students then decided to move their protests to the streets of Braamfontein when they were not happy with what they called 'police heavy handedness'.

Business were closing because you will remember what happened last time they were in Braamfontein.

Just as they were making their way back to university, police with three police nyalas wanted them to disperse right there. But Vuyani Pambo was speaking in front of the police, trying to tell them they are moving back to campus. Police took him to one of the nyalas. Students reacted, some of them started picking stones.

Earlier today police also fired stun grenades to disperse protesting students at the Union Building in Tshwane.

According to EWN reporter, Barry Bateman, students were trying to enter to the Union Building gates.

Students are now marching through Johannesburg CBD. Bateman says it looks like they are trying to find a place where they can gather and debrief.
