Minister of International Relations Maite Nkoana-Mashabane has signed the 'instrument of withdrawal' from International Criminal Court.
This follows Tuesday's announcement that Burundi has signed legislation to make it the first country to withdraw from the ICC.
The ICC was established to investigate, prosecute and try individuals accused of committing the most serious crimes against humanity.
A year ago South Africa said it planned to leave the ICC after being criticised for ignoring a court order to arrest the Sudanese president, Omar Hassan al-Bashir when he visited the country. Bashir faces charges for genocide and war crimes.
