The national health department said it was important to establish the facts around the deaths of 36 psychiatric patients.

Health minister, Aaron Motsoaledi, has ordered an investigation into the death of 36 psychiatric patients during a transfer from Life Healthcare Esisimeni Hospital to another facility in Gauteng.

Motsoaledi referred the matter to the health ombudsman after meeting with Gauteng health MEC Qedani Mahlangu on Wednesday.

Responding to allegations of negligence and wrong-doing from families of the deceased and mental health groups, Mahlangu said not everything was "hunky dory" with the patients as some were difficult to manage.

Listen to her response below:

He said the recommendations from the health ombudsman will provide clear guidelines on how to address the matter once the facts have been established.

Listen to the interview below:

It is important to make sure we understand what happened... we need to make sure this does not happen again.
