Literature corner: Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh exploding myths about SA politics

CapeTalk's Eusebius Mckaiser speaks to Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh, winner of the 2016 City Press Tafelberg Nonfiction Award.

Mpofu-Walsh won R120 000 for the development of his book “Democracy and Delusion”, which tackles 10 myths that ground much of South African political discussion.

The book also promises to provide possible solutions on issues like free education, land reform, and state participation in the economy.

This is partly a story about the various delusions that have been debunked in my life over the last five years about our country.

It is about the stories we tell ourselves and the myths that clouds South African politics ... The idea is to shock the public debate out of its complacency

He says the biggest myth he wants to debunk in the book is the idea that "we have a good story to tell", that there has been a slow but steady progress in South Africa.

I want to explode that and i want to say that in many cases we actually stagnated. in many cases we actually worse off before 1994 and reversed significant progress over the last decade.

Last year Mpofu-Walsh obtained a master’s degree with distinction from Oxford University and is currently busy with his doctorate on the creation of an African nuclear-free zone.
