UCT pays tribute to Andre Brink

The University of Cape Town is hosting a tribute to renowned author André Philippus Brink. Brink died on a flight from Amsterdam to Cape Town on 7 February. He was in Europe to receive an honorary doctorate by a Belgian university.

Brink was born in 1935 at Vrede in the Orange Free State. He matriculated at Lydenburg High School in 1952. He studied at Potchefstroom University and completed his Masters (cum laude) in English and Afrikaans.

In 1980 he became head of the Afrikaans-Nederlands Department at Rhodes University. He moved to Cape Town in 1991 and was appointed as head of the English Department at the University of Cape Town. He later became professor emeritus in English at the university.

He has written 60 books which were translated and published in 33 languages including Serbo-Croatian, Japanese, isiXhosa and Vietnamese. He received the Hertzog Prize twice in 2000 and 2001.
