NPA's Jiba, Mrwebi struck off the roll of advocates

The High Court in Pretoria has ruled that senior NPA officials advocates Nomgcobo Jiba and Lawrence Mrwebi have brought the prosecuting authority, legal profession and the office of the President into disrepute.

Jiba and Mrwebi have been struck off the roll of advocates, following an application by the General Council of the Bar of SA.

Jiba is the Deputy National Director of Public Prosecutions while Mrwebi heads up the Specialised Commercial Crime unit.

Judge Francis Legodi was damning in his findings against Jiba and Mrwebi, reports EWN's Barry Bateman.

Bateman explains that the pair did everything to ensure that suspended crime intelligence head Richard Mdluli was not prosecuted on charges of fraud and corruption.

He says he cannot believe that two advocates, who hold such high positions in the NPA, will stoop so low for the protection and defense of one individual who had been implicated in serious offences.

The General Council of the Bar applied to the High Court in Pretoria to have them struck from the roll following several adverse judicial findings against them.

Among the cases was Jiba’s authorisation of racketeering charges against former KwaZulu-Natal Hawks head Johan Booysen.

Bateman has read parts of the damning judgement which calls into question Jiba and Mrwebi's integrity.

It remains to be seen whether Jiba and Mrwebi will appeal the ruling, and what action, if any, the Presidency will take against them.
