Paramedic services may be delayed in flagged 'red-zones'

The services of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) staff may be hindered in areas which have been identified as high risk.

EMS crews aren't taking any chances and will have to wait for Saps escorts before arriving and leaving scenes in 'red-zones', where attacks on paramedics are more prominent.

The ambulance attacks are said to be happening in areas where emergency services are most needed.

On Wednesday, EMS staff marched in Philippi to protest the escalation of attacks on vehicles in 'red zone' areas.

Western Cape Health MEC Nomafrench Mbombo was at the protest, and called on communities to help protect paramedics.

Mbombo's spokesperson Luyanda Mfeka says officials have asked community members to come forward with information regarding the criminals who are targeting the attacks.

What we really need is intelligence about who they are and where they operate, and we need that handed over to the Saps.

Luyanda Mfeka, Spokesperson for the Western Cape Minister of Health, Dr Nomafrench Mbombo

Mfeka explains that collaboration between the department, Saps, and community policing forums is necessary to restore safety to the profession.
