Do you own a work by a South African artist? South African art is the flavour of the month; it might be worth way more than you imagine.

Sales of South African art is booming

There has been a huge rise in the global value of South African art in recent years. One of the people credited with this phenomenon is Giles Peppiatt, Director of Modern & Contemporary African Art at auction house Bonhams.

“Sales of South African art in London are booming,” says Peppiatt. “We recently sold an Irma Stern called Arab Priest for more than for R54-million!” [as per exchange rate on 2 March, 2015]

Collectors of SA art now come from everywhere

“A lot of what makes an art piece valuable depends on where you exhibit your work and who buys it,” admits Peppiatt. “We always try to get the wealthiest people to bid for our paintings.”

Peppiatt says there many collectors of South African art and that, over the past seven or eight years, these collectors have become much more international.

Do you own SA art? Here’s what to do…

“Get it valued,” advises Peppiatt. “If it’s worth a lot; I’d suggest you try to sell it in London where the market for South African art is very strong and records are flying.”

One of the South African artists that’ll fetch you a fortune, according to Peppiatt, is Gerard Sekoto, the first black South African to paint in a Western style.

“We sold a painting of his for R13.5-million in London,” says Peppiatt. “It might sound like a lot, but I think it’s very cheap for his wonderful work.”

Sekoto died penniless in Paris in 1993, never having been home since 1947.
