Sars No.2 suspended over suspicious payments amounting R1.2 million

Sars chief officer for business and individual taxes Jonas Makwakwa has been suspended over allegedly suspicious and unusual payments into his accounts amounting to R1.2 million between 2010 and 2016.

A banking regulator not yet named noticed suspicious payments into Makwakwa's account and started an investigation, according to amaBhungane Centre for Investigative Journalism journalist Craig McKune.

Mail & Guardian reported that 75 cash deposits totalling R785 130 were made into Makwakwa’s account, and 48 of these deposits were made between 2014 and 2015, when Makwakwa became powerful at Sars.

The investigative report was then delivered to Sars Commissioner Tom Moyane on May 17 this year.

Moyane's letter to Sars colleagues about Makwakwa's suspension has been circulating on social media, but Sars has not responded on the matter yet.

Makwakwa's suspension pends investigation.
