We spoke to Scott Drimie, Director of the Southern Africa Food Lab and Associate Professor of Health Sciences at Stellenbosch, about the South African food system of which food security (or insecurity) is an outcome.

Listen to the audio at the end of this article for more detail.

We produce enough food in terms of our staples. However, for many people the food that is available is simply unaffordable.

Our food system is unequal and therefore at risk.

100 commercial farmers produce about 90 percent of all of South Africa’s food.

There are many successful examples in Asia of countries with equitable land redistribution.

Climate change will place our water systems under severe pressure. Adapting will be immensely challenging for society.

We’re undergoing a nutrition transition. We have overweight people that are malnourished. The wrong kinds of foods are affordable and available.

Emerging farmers need extensive support or they will fail.

Aging farmers pose a huge risk to food security. It also presents a great opportunity.
