Is the significance of Heritage Day being forgotten and overshadowed by a 'braai' culture?

Meanwhile, Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa who is at today's official Heritage Day celebration in Orkney in the North West tells 702's John Robbie: "We want to live to the values of the constitution, which says in the preamble we are united in our diversity. We want to live up to that."

What better day than today to dig deep into what the concepts of 'heritage' and 'culture' actually mean? Speaking to Nikiwe Bikitsha standing in for Redi Tlhabi, Founding COO of the National Heritage Council Prof. Somadoda Fikeni defined these concepts thus:

'Culture' is generally the way of life, whatever that may be - it is very embracive. But 'heritage' are those specific things we preserve from one generation to another, from the past as part of the collective memory of a people, in order to inform the present about the past and also equip successive generations to deal with their environment.
