We remember Collins Chabane (15 April 1960 – 15 March 2015)

Last Sunday, the country woke up to the tragic news of the passing on of the Minister of Public Service and Administration Mr Ohm Collins Chabane.

A Memorial Service for the late Minister is due to start at noon today at the Tshwane Events Centre (formerly known as Pretoria Show Grounds), 205 Soutter Street, Pretoria. Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver the keynote address.

Minister Chabane will be accorded an Official Funeral Category 1, which is the status afforded to servicing Ministers, Speaker of the National Assembly, Chief Justice of the Republic of South Africa , Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) and Premiers of Provinces. In line with this category, the President has ordered the National Flags be flown at half-mast at all flag posts in the Republic on Saturday, the day of the funeral.

His Funeral will take place at Minister Chabane’s home village Xikundu, Thulamela Municipality in the Vhembe District, Limpopo. President Jacob Zuma will deliver the oration at the morning event.

Among other things, Minister Chabane will be remembered for promoting traditional Xitsonga music. His band with Bezil Makombe called Movement was formed after the two met in Harare in 1999.

A seperate memorial service for Chabane's two Protectors, Sergeant Lawrence Lentsoane and Sergeant Lesiba Sekele, who died in the accident with Chabane, is also being held today. Their funeral arrangements are being handled by the South African Police Services (SAPS) as they died in their line of duty.

Meanwhile members of the public have been invited to write their messages to the Chabane Family in condolence books at these venues:

  1. Tynhuis Parliament
  2. Union Building, Pretoria
  3. DOC/GCIS Office; 1035 Francis Baard Street; Hatfield
  4. Offices of Department of Public Service and Administration, 116 Johannes Ramokhoase (formerly known as Proes Street)
  5. School of Government (formerly known as Palama) , ZK Matthews Building, 70 Meintje Street, Sunnyside
  6. The Office of the Premier in Limpopo

Members of the public have until Sunday 22 March to send messages to communication@presidency.gov.za. Those messages will be collated into a book, which will be delivered to the Chabane family.

A social media campaign on Twitter and Facebook will run until Sunday. Members of the public are requested to tag @PresidencyZa on Twitter or to post messages via the Presidency of the Republic of South Africa Facebook page. The hashtag to be used is #RIPMinChabane
