Situation tense in Etwatwa following 53 arrests

Earlier today Etwatwa community members were protesting outside Etwatwa Police Station demanding the release of 53 members who were arrested last night.

The 53 community members are appearing in the Benoni Magistrates Court for their involvement in the assault and murder of two young men who are alleged to have been members of the OVL gang.

According to EWN reporter Clement Manyathela, the two young men were burnt to death and their bodies found on the railway.

I met parents who were picking up their children from schools because they don't want their children to be victims of gangsters in the area.

I was speaking to one police officer and he was telling me that 'there is nothing we can do, we don't have an instruction from above that says when people are burning a house or trying to kill a suspected gang member we must disperse them'.

Clement Manyathela, EWN reporter

The father of one of the young men killed says he is not happy with how the police have handled the case.

He says he doesn't believe that his son was a gangster.

And he says even when the child was murdered the police were just watching.
