#FeesMustFall protesters should account for damage

City’s Safety and Security Directorate JP Smith says individuals and shop owners who were attacked during the #FessMustFall protests to Parliament on Wednesday should open criminal charges.

He says the people responsible for perpetuating the kind of violence that was seen in the City should be held accountable.

There is video footage available to help identify these perpetrators once a criminal case has been opened, says Smith.

I wouldn't be surprised if the damages is set around R1.5 to R2 million.

According to Smith, one law enforcement vehicle, four Metro police cars, two SAPS vehicles, one MyCiTi bus, a car, an unconfirmed number of Golden Arrow buses and a number of buildings in the Parliament precinct were damaged by protesters.

FeesMustFall is a legitimate issue but this kind of public violence undermines that issue.

Six protesting students were arrested on Thursday but news broadcasts and video footage show there were more than six people responsible for the destruction.
