ANC came bruising for a fight says Mayor Trollip

The Nelson Mandela Bay Metro council meeting was disrupted on Thursday, after he says glasses and cups were hurled and a heavy water jug was used to bash one mayoral committee member on the head. One Councillor from the DA and another from the ANC were hospitalised.

Mayor for Nelson Mandela Bay, Atholl Trollip, described the incident as horrific.

According to Trollip, the ANC disrupted council over a matter involving an ANC Councillor who had been accused of code of conduct violations.

The Council was setting up a review board for the accused councillor, but the ANC refused to have the matter heard.

The speaker identified two councillors and asked them to leave, they refused ... they started chanting songs that they were going to beat up the leadership of the council.

They walked to the Speaker and one of them picked up a heavy water jug... the person with a jug in his hand then struck one of the mayoral committee members on the head with the jug.

Trollip says the situation was saved by one of the security guards who discharged a fire arm and shot at the ceiling. ANC members made a getaway after that shot in the ceiling.

He says ANC members came to council meeting bruising for a fight.

These people have not actually come into terms that they have lost the election and no longer in government.

Trollop says this was the lowest point in the history of the Council.

Listen to mayor Trollip explain the chaos in PE chamber:

ANC's Zizi Kodwa responded to the events that happened, and told Stephen Grootes that leadership of political parties should not be laying blame in public prematurely as it is irresponsible.

He presented a contradictory position. On the one hand emphasising all political parties should take collective responsibility for the events. On the other hand he agreed that individuals responsible should be sanctioned once an investigation was complete.

What happened in Nelson Mandela Bay must never happen again because it is an embarrassment in a democratic institution called a Council.

Zizi Kodwa, National Spokesperson of the ANC

A council chamber is a place to resolve differences and "violence cannot resolve anything", he said.

The ANC condemns the events without reservation insisted Kodwa.
