Hawks surprised at Ipid's speedy 'kidnap' investigation

The Hawks unit has expressed surprise at how quickly the Independent Police Investigation Directorate (Ipid) began investigating the alleged kidnapping of Sars official Vlok Symington.

It is unusual for Ipid to ask officers to give a warning statement just two hours after a charge was laid against them. This in connection with the involvement of Hawks’ Nyameka Xaba and others holding Symington hostage over a document they wanted returned.

It’s understood Xaba mistakenly gave Symington a copy of the email exchange between Sars lawyer and Sars boss Tom Moyane, which showed the revenue services attorney disagreed with the prosecution of Gordhan.

Symington [recorded](http://It was then that Xaba, at least three colleagues and Moyane’s bodyguard held him in a boardroom) what he claims was him being held against his will in a Sars boardroom.

EWN's Barry Bateman reports the Hawks are very critical of how Ipid is handling the investigation.

Ipid head Robert mcBride, back at his desk after an 18 month suspension, was once investigated by Xaba, the very man now at the centre of Ipid's investigation.

Bateman says it was McBride who once warned Pravin Gordahn about the Hawks.
