Private ambulance services deny Motsoaledi's accusations of select pick-ups

Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi says he will be introducing a single number for emergency services to avoid private ambulances being selective in who they pick up.

Oliver Wright, CEO of South African Private Ambulance and Emergency Services Association, says he is shocked by the Minister's comments that private ambulances refuse to pick those who can't afford their services.

Wright says they do pick up patients and bill them later, saying there is no free ambulance service facility in South Africa at the moment.

If a patient cannot afford to pay for what they've been billed, they can negotiate with the service provider to explore other payment options.

He says it is very concerning that the Minister is still recommending the single emergency number after objections on the matter were submitted.

The minister must be aware of this objections.
