The Friday Stand-In 2016

EFF says their behaviour in Parly is constitutional and correct

Following the recent chaotic scenes from the Parliament of South Africa where shouting and chanting has almost become a norm, Friday Stand-In Vuyo Mvoko asks what needs to be done to get parliament proceedings in order. He was joined by Chief Whips of the Democratic Allience John Steenhuizen, ANC's Jackson Mthembu and the EFF's Veronica Mente.

John Steenhuizen, Chief Whip, Democratic Alliance says the question and answer sessions are a key to parliamentary oversight.

We take the role of parliament seriously. We believe Parliament must be used as a tool, as the Constitution intended, to hold both the President and the executive accountable.

John Steenhuizen, Chief Whip, Democratic Alliance

Jackson Mthembu, Chief Whip for the ANC says Parliament has been reduced in stature from what it is supposed to be through actions of some parties. He says the EFF are creating anarchy.

The reality of the matter is that we have a Parliament that our people fought for, we have a parliament that our people lost their lives for, a Parliament that all of us must use as an instrument to better the lives of our people and not anything else

Jackson Mthembu, Chief Whip, ANC

Veronica Mente, EFF Parliamentary Whip, says that her party's conduct is not wrong. She says the Constitution of the country states clearly what should be done if the President breaks his oath of office. She says he should resign from office.

As EFF we have taken an oath of office and cannot lie to people and say a person who has violated the Constitution must still stand in a house that is so honourable, under oath having broken the law.

Veronica Mente, Parliamentary Whip, EFF
