Ivan Pillay's lawyer says charges had no substance

Lawyer representing former Sars Deputy Commissioner Ivan Pillay, Advocate Nazeer Casim, says the National Prosecuting Authority has made the right decision by withdrawing fraud charges against Pillay, Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and former Sars Commissioner Oupa Magashula.

Casim says when he met with NPA head Shaun Abrahams submitted to him that there was no substance to the case.

If common sense and logic prevailed I think a charge should not have been prepared and served on the people concerned.

Advocate Nazeer Casim, Ivan Pillay's lawyer

He says civil society has achieved what should be considered a victory because the charges are withdrawn.

He says the NPA must regard this as a lesson and focus on important issues.

We don't want Wednesday strikes and protests because what happens is someone's shop is going to be looted.
