Yacoob and Kriegler slam Shaun Abrahams

Shaun Abrahams, the National Director of Public Prosecution (NDPP) announced on Monday morning that the NPA was withdrawing fraud charges against Minister of Finance Pravin Gordhan and his former colleagues Ivan Pillay and Oupa Magashula.

The charges against Gordhan related to a pension fund payout for former Sars commissioner Ivan Pillay in 2009.

Calls are mounting for Abrahams to resign.

Former Justice of the Constitutional Court, Zak Yacoob, says he is surprised by NPA's conduct. He says the charges had to be withdrawn.

The interesting thing is why he withdrew. He withdrew because he came to a conclusion that there was no way in which intention could be established.

They never had any evidence, he knew it and everybody knew it...

Yacoob says Abrahams is not fit to be the national director of the NPA. He says the media and organisations like Freedom Under Law did a brilliant job in trying to get the Abrahams to justify the prosecution and proving that they were doing wrong.

Judge Johann Kriegler says it's complete nonsense that Abrahams says he didn't have power to intervene in Gordhan's case. He says his obligation is to make sure everything runs smoothly within the NPA.

The man is in charge, he takes the responsibility, the oversight and the buck stops with him. If he is going to start prosecuting Ministers of state of crimes of dishonesty, it's a very big buck...

Judge Johan Kriegler, Former constitutional court Judge

Adriaan Basson, Editor at News24 also added his voice to those who are disappointed by the NPA.

He says he was upset when Shaun Abrahams made an announcement that charges against Gordhan have been withdrawn. It's so immature, he says.

It is so shocking that they'd announce to the whole country that Pravin Gordhan is going to be charged with fraud charges without doing the most basic of investigations.

Adriaan Basson, Editor at News24

Basson says indicators are all there that this was a politically motivated case and someone wanted Gordhan fired.

Unfortunately, South Africa is no longer keeping quiet people are vocal, they march and speak up, says Basson.
