Hints of political motivation reflect badly on the law - Law Society

Co-chairperson of the Law Society of South Africa, Mvuzo Notyesi, spoke to Stephen Grootes about the impact of NPA boss Shaun Abrahams actions around the fraud charges against Pravin Gordhan.

'In view of all the trauma that the country has been subjected to' following charges he laid and withdrew against Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan, Notyezi says Abrahams must reconsider his position.

Notyesi says the application to have Abrahams' name removed from the roll may be successful if it is proven that he was dishonest when charging Gordhan.

If it can be shown that in the process of making all these decisions, there was some form of dishonesty. Then the application may well be successful.

Mvuzo Notyesi, co-chairperson of the Law Society of South Africa

Notyesi says it reflects negatively on law enforcement agencies when there are suspicions of political motivations and manipulations in decision-making, and it's a bad tendency that has developed.

Law must separated from politics...The institutions and those tasked to lead those institutions must not consider irrelevant factors like political motives, they must deal with issues on facts presented before them and the provisions of the law, as... independently, as our Constitution requires.
